A secure exam browser (also called a lockdown browser) is an application that restricts a candidate's computer during an online assessment, disabling other tabs, copy-paste, screen sharing, and navigation away from the exam window.
Why it matters
A secure exam browser controls the exam window well, but on its own it operates only at the application layer: anything running outside that window, whether an invisible AI overlay, an on-device LLM, a second device, or a remote-access helper, is invisible to it. Mac support has also historically been a weak point of the category.

A concrete example
A certification program requires candidates to install a secure exam browser before sitting their exam. On a Windows laptop, the browser locks down cleanly: no other windows, no clipboard access, no way out until submission. On a colleague's MacBook, the same requirement produces a rockier install and a narrower set of enforced restrictions, a gap candidates on forums have noticed and occasionally exploited, simply because the platform's engineering effort has historically concentrated on Windows first. Neither installation, regardless of platform, sees what else is running on the machine outside the browser's own window.
